Chris Cochrane:
Having known and listened to Loren's music for many years, from his early recordings and attendance at several of his shows, I was curious about how our different styles of playing would affect each other and sound like. I reached out to Loren to see if he was available to do a show at Ibeam in Brooklyn, Loren wrote back and we coordinated a date.

I also wanted to ask several other musicians to share the bill with us as a trio, and possibly improvise together with Loren and me. I set out to pick musicians with whom maybe I had played once or so: Stephen Haynes, and two others I knew but had not yet played with before: Gabby Fluke-Mogul and James Ilgenfritz.

I also wanted to pick musicians I suspected Loren had not yet played with. The recordings of this release come from the moment when at Ibeam that night, when the six of us began to improvise together before the show, and collectively made a decision to play most of the evening as a sextet.

James Ilgenfritz:
The titles of each track on this album all refer to different variety of plantlife that grow in the wild, often thought of as weeds. Some are invasive, and their rhizomatic behavior makes them effective at eluding human influence. In contrast to the many forms of cultivated vegetation to which humans devote so much time and energy, many of these plants are fast-growing and fiercely independent.

These characteristics are not unlike the human drive toward creative expression, of the spirit that improvised music embodies. The body and mind can both fail, but the spirit will always find a path towards exponential growth. When I learned of Loren’s book of paintings and drawings called “Wildweeds,” I was immediately struck by the resonance between the sound of the group on this evening, and the images that appear in Loren’s book.

The improvisations that took place on this evening in February 2023 felt like a meditation on the will to thrive. Perhaps this perspective is influenced by Ibeam’s proximity to the Gowanus canal, or the cold February air in Brooklyn that night. But the subtle interplay of noise, space, patience, urgency, and listening heard here reflects the subtle charge in the air that evening. The music evokes a commitment to the elusive, ephemeral nature of both our attention and our physical bodies. It was an honor to gather and mark the passage of time in this way.
