ime Phase Trio features dynamic and nimble playing from Jen Baker, Ty Citerman and Shayna Dunkelman in a provocative ensemble of trombone, guitar, electronics and percussion. Across six pieces (five by Citerman and one by Baker), these three seasoned improvisers have whimsical conversations, at times delicate, cerebral, provocative and growling. Rhythms erupt or unfurl, texture and mood are key elements, groove is fleeting. Multiphonics, electronic blips and whirrs, percussive hums - all of this moves lyrical melodic sketches into strange and refracted territory.

Tracks 1, 4 and 7: Droplets #1, #2 and #3 - This is a “choice-based” improvisation piece by Ty Citerman; the score offers the performers six single bar cells that can be played in any order, any number of times - these “droplets” are the seeds for the voices in this group to take flight. Each cell can be bent, broken, inverted, transposed or otherwise distorted beyond the ink on the page to suit the music’s course.
Tracks 2, 5, 6 and 8: Mud, Streams, Water Music and Current - These four pieces by Ty Citerman are all inspired by the movement and stillness of water in nature. Each one is melodic and somewhat lyrical, without any harmony - simple, straightforward points of departure for whimsical, delicate and sometimes ferocious improvisations. Each one is a different statement of appreciation for water as a life force and natural resource that is endangered by climate change, inspired by the southern Atlantic Ocean; an unnamed Vermont stream; north Florida swampland; and New York City’s Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.
Track 3: Tennis - This piece by Ty Citerman is rhythmic, bouncy, playful and conversational. Perhaps the oddball hit of the compilation that plays to the group’s sense of humor.
Track 9: 25 degrees of sticking to it - This piece by Jen Baker is newly orchestrated for the trio…
