about

The Dust Moves is based on a story found in Buddhist scripture in which a monk recounts his enlightenment as occurring after seeing dust floating in a door frame bathed in light. Realizing the stillness that surrounded that dust, he reports to the gathering of other monks: “what is clear and still is called space, and what moves is called dust. The word ‘dust,’ then, means ‘that which moves.” (Shurangama Sutra, 2:18)

This profound imagining of stillness around and within motion is a guiding metaphor for The Dust Moves, which presents a series of simple and introspective animations that are narrated and developed by a highly interactive and genre-bending score. The Dust Moves was made possible by a grant from the American Composers Forum with funds provided by the Jerome Foundation. Additional support was provided by New Music USA’s Composer Assistance Program.
